THE AWATEA PACIFIC JAZZ EXPOSITION
“Connection to the Collection”- the contextual framework
The vision is to create and develop a performance portfolio of new works that is inspired by the collections of the museum and, informed and supported by connections to local, regional and international educationalists, creative, cultural and innovative thought leaders.
These new works will draw on the culture and identity of Tangata Whenua and Te Moana Nui Kiwa music artists as a means of bringing to life and to light the museum’s collections from the story telling place of turangawaewae (a place to stand) - of connectedness to the land, the oceans, the environment, to our ancestors and our shared histories. From the place of turangawaewae artists can draw strength to explore pathways that strengthen links with the past and present to inform new works.
Awatea – the first light is symbolic and metaphorical; to re-create, re-define and reframe the stories of Pacific peoples’ indigeneity - through music. The Awatea-Pacific collaboration with Tamaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum provides a new platform for story-telling by indigenous peoples.
AWATEA PACIFIC JAZZ COLLABORATION PROGRAMME
International Jazz Day through Awatea-Pacific will be celebrated as an indigenous exposition of jazz music inspired by the collections and artefacts of the Tamaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum. A strategic collaboration with the Museum as the Wharenui - the house, in which we reside - allows for dynamic possibilities to create new music works inspired by connection with the museums’ collections – including the Museum as a Wharenui of inspiring performance spaces.
